Already this year Atti had a surgery to put tubes in his ears, now he’s having surgery to fix his cute little wonky eyes, and he’ll have two more surgeries in the upcoming months to fix other things that don’t work right when you have cerebral palsy. Of course, working around surgeons and specialists I don’t have the luxury of waiting until school is on a break. So he misses a lot of school. Which means that I have to do everything I can to keep him healthy the rest of the time. When he’s missing weeks at a time recovering from surgeries, there’s no way I can let some sniffles slow us down. I’ve got to use everything I’ve got to keep him well, and when he does get sick, get him better fast.
I’m excited to be partnering with Mucinex to share some ideas to get through this cold and flu season with a smile. I don’t often have an excuse to slow down and take a whole day to play, so I want to get through the whining and the discomfort as quickly as possible to use that sick time to create some special memories. In future posts I’ll be sharing some great sick day activities to make this time count, but for today I want to talk prevention. Since Atti was born in February and with significant respiratory issues, I was that mom that wouldn’t take her child in public for the first six months of his life. I got some grief over that, but he never got sick and I don’t regret it!
Nowadays we wash our hands religiously, maybe a little too religiously. I have walked in on Atti pulling wipe after wipe out of the container as he sings, “This is the way we wash our hands..” and laughs his head off. Apparently he thinks Mama’s a little crazy. We’re also big juice drinkers around here. Whenever I hear Atti start to sniff I pump him full of orange juice and stop that sniffle where it stands. And of course we’re big believers in the power of snuggles.
I always say it in the disclaimer, but let me emphasize here that I only work with companies I can wholeheartedly support and that I spend my own money on. I turn down a LOT of ad partnerships. But I jumped on this one because I actually do use Mucinex for myself and my family. I first tried Mucinex when my doctor recommended it to me, and it’s now as much a staple for sickness as tissues and ginger ale. This is a product I would recommend to anybody, whether I was being sponsored or not.

First of all, I LOVE Mucinex. It's the best stuff for congestion. In fact, it is time for my next dose (yes, I hab a code). But when the kiddoes are sick, I have a variety of tricks I use to help distract them from being sick. One is watching a movie of their choosing together. That means me dropping everything and watching it with them. Another fan favorite is coloring in a new coloring book (or finding some fun coloring pages online). No matter what, I keep the Children's Mucinex on hand so I'm ready.
My daughter likes watching Nick Jr. when she’s under the weather.
I love Mucinex as a frequent sinus infection sufferer. My fav thing to do is sunggle under the covers with a humidifier and watch reality TV. But I'm 42, not a kid! LOL
I always keep a few fun craft projects hidden away for when a cold comes, nothing fancy, some pipe cleaners and beads, or some special new markers and a coloring book. Something that we can sit quietly and snuggle and do, to hopefully take his mind off of his cough or not feeling well.
When my kids are sick I usually give them a new coloring book, so we can color together or play Tic Tac Toe.
We like to snuggle and read books in between sick day naps.
Dude, your sponsored giveaways are just soooo tacky. Tacky tacky tacky. Go back to your real stuff. It's way better.
My children love snuggling while watching television when they are feeling under the weather. They also enjoy playing board games too!
I have never used Musinex. I will give it a try when another cold comes out way. (Hopefully not soon, we just got over one a few weeks ago). As for what activities my kids like. Well I'd have to say caressing them while we snuggle and watch a movie or cartoon. And of course I make them feel as comfortable as possible because I remember as a kid it would feel terrible to feel under the weather. Lets not forget that chicken soup that does a world or goodness!
When my son would get sick, he was allowed to come and snuggle with me in the big bed and watch me play on my gameboy. Now that he is older, we have camp out in the living room and watch movies, until he zonks out on the couch.
Patty
We have had to do lots of nebulizing in our kids past…so my trick for getting a squirmy infant/toddler or impatient preschooler to sit still for the entire treatment was to have nebbing specific toys or shows just for nebbing…it help them form a habit as well…and it got us through some of those hard sick days.
I've used Mucinex for years. It's the only thing that helps me breath when I'm congested. You just have to remember to drink extra fluids because it will pull fluids from your body if you don't.
Great post. Since my "baby" is 30 I can't really remember what we did when they were sick (he's the baby of 4) But with 4 it seemed like once they hit school, somebody was sick all the time – just passed it around!
We spend a lot of time snuggled in reading books or listening to audio books when the boys are feeling under the weather. We also have a few games put up that are reserved for sick days. Not to mention the coveted bright orange adult sized t-shirt that is only allowed to be worn when having a sick day–it just seems to brighten the day and spirits.
How exciting to be partnering with them! They do rock! Clears you up pretty quick!!
We just do a TV day. I normally don't let my kids watch TV before 4pm, but on a sick day, anything goes!

Well, I have to confess that I always loved when my kids got just a little sick because they were all MINE at that point! I loved making soup, watching silly shows all day….but I have to mention my beloved grandmomma who raised me….I LOVED getting sick because of all the rituals she had in taking care of me. ALWAYS Campbell's chicken noodle soup, in a big bowl, on an even bigger plate, surrounded perfectly by saltine crackers….and she'd crawl in bed right next to me…ahhh man, I loved getting sick….and if I had a fever her sweet, cool hand would rest on my forehead, pure bliss….I've tried to pass that love on to my children when they don't feel good….we just spend the day together snuggled, talking and me thoroughly enjoying having them all to myself!!
