Tutorial: T-shirt Turban

I wound up with an extra large men’s T-shirt somehow, I can’t even remember how now, and it’s been sitting on top of my dresser waiting for me to figure out what to do with it. I’m almost never motivated by the process of making, I’m motivated by the project, so it just sat there staring and staring at me and stressing me out. So I gave myself a little iron crafter challenge. Mix things up, make something completely outside my creative process, and keep making until I’d used up the entire black T-shirt.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing these projects with you. 1 T-shirt, 3 projects.

The first one is so simple I feel a little bit guilty, but I’m counting it anyway.

I love a turban. See easy, so classy, so Katherine Hepburn or Norma Desmond. It’s Old Hollywood while covering up my greasy hair. All you have to do to make one is get a T-shirt that can fit around your head twice. Men’s XL is what worked for me with just a little big of wiggle room. Use a ruler and rotary cutter to cut off the hem.

Then cut through the T-shirt again 8″ higher so you have a wide tube.

That’s it. You made a turban.

To wear it wrap the tube around the back of your head and bring all the extra to the front.

Twist it at least twice, but you can give it a couple more if you need to take up some of the slack in your T-shirt, and then put your head through that hole and fluff as necessary.

Seriously, how easy is that? From Men’s T-shirt to Fancy Lady in two steps.
