Year of Pleasures – Handicap Parking

Handicap Placard

We finally went to the trouble of filling out forms and visiting the doctor for his precious precious signature, and now we are let into the exclusive club of people who get to park closer. This is just the greatest law ever. Do you know what a colossal pain in the butt it is to try to get a toddler into his wheelchair when you are sandwiched in so close to the cars around you that you can barely get the door open?

I am also discovering that there are a WHOLE lot of people who abuse this privilege. I have watched as time and again three obviously able-bodied people debark from their enormous pickup truck while I’m left driving around trying to find a spot that will give me a little breathing room. There’s a special place in hell for those people.

I fully plan on using this parking pass as a perk for anyone I can talk into taking my child for a day. “Oh? You’re going to the zoo? If you bring Atti I’ll let you have the parking pass.” I think it will be in high demand.

Yep there are abusers, but also remember that sometimes an able looking person does need the space. I used to have one when Amy was on chemo… and she needed it but didn't look like it. The fun I had with old folks waving their badges at me implying I was misusing the spot, and I'd wave hers back. Usually at school, as when going to drop or collect there was always one trip where she obviously wasn't with me but was going to be.

PS no offence taken.. just worth remembering, however if they haven't shown their badge feel free to uh scrape that wheelchair down the side of their truck.

I know a couple of people in my neighborhood that just "borrow" their parents' pass. I see them driving down the street with it hanging from their mirror, when I know it's not been issued to them. It makes me mad too.

I'm so glad you got one! They are truly a lifesaver! Even though some places the handicap spots are always taken (Target. Walmart.) I got so peeved when I saw a car parking in a handicap spot without a pass so they could "quickly run in". Ugh! The worst is at my son's daycare. Park and walk the extra couple feet people. Other people need it!

I saw someone else posted this – but best to remain open minded regarding the pass. I had one for years. Although I may look able bodied, I had just gotten out of my wheelchair and no stamina. So saving those extra steps walking from the parking lot allowed me to do more things I needed/wanted to do.
