2010 Year of Pleasures #24

I spent an entire day last week trying to track down lumber options to have my kitchen island custom built, and guess what we found this weekend?

It was absolute serendipity. We were making plans to drive an hour a way in a rented pickup truck to buy the materials we’d need, when Bear got a text with a picture of the kitchen island and the text, “at Big Lots” from a number he didn’t recognize. Turns out that someone he works with saw it and thought it would be good for the office.

Every kitchen island I looked at cost thousands of dollars. Even my custom made super simple one was going to cost $500. This one cost us $229 and a days labor. Now *this* is a kitchen I can work in.

  1. Ooooh! How big is the top of that? I desperately need a new cutting table in my sewing room and would love something like this with storage and wheels. I don't know if Big Lots in IL would have the same stuff as CA but it would be worth a look. LOVE IT!

  2. Oh how funny, it does look like a big hole, doesn't it. It's actually a random square of black granite. The only use we could come up with is as a place to set down something hot without burning the butcher block, because it's too small to roll out. Beth – it's like 4' x 2.5'. I'll email you.

  3. That's a great find! Big Lots is so random. We found an AMAZING bookcase with glass doors and a drawer in the bottom for $50. Haven't found anything there again since. lol. Congrats on the lucky find!

  4. you can also chop on the granite… granite is harder than knives.. won't do your knives much good though, but handy for that moment when you just want to slice one thing.I love it… it's perfect. And best of all it can go with you.

  5. Good find! Always nice when these things drop from the sky. How nice it has the square of granite. I was thinking it was a cut out for a small sink.
