Cupcakes and Cleavage

Friday night I went to another San Diego Girls Night Out event with a bunch of the bloggers I went trapezing with. I am having so much fun with these women. The internet has given me so much, one of these days I’m going to stop being surprised. It has been such a blast to find this big group of hilarious, outgoing girlfriends who love everything I love.

We met up at this super fancy pants lingerie boutique called Intimacy. I have to admit, I was a little wary going in. I am a cheapskate, and buy all my bras at Target. I was expecting to show up, mingle and giggle, gorge myself on cupcakes, and sneak out without buying anything. Didn’t work out that way.

Intimacy is the home of The Bra Whisperer, as seen on Oprah. They determine bra size without any measuring tapes or formulas, but by sizing you up and taking a multitude of variables – firmness, shape, etc. – into account. It was a little bit weird. I went into the dressing room, got topless and put on a robe, then when the attendant came in I opened the robe to flash her, she took one look and then left to go get a bunch of things to try on.

Despite my best efforts at frugality, they got me. I tried on this amazing bra that lifted everything where it was supposed to be, smoothed everything over, I swear this bra actually made me stand up straighter. It was too good to pass up. And it doubled as a Valentines present for Bear, so it was worth it.

We spent a lot of the night talking about our raggedy bras and how we all so rarely do something so nice for ourselves, and it really brought to a head something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. It’s so easy for me to get lost in everything I do for everyone else. Atticus needs so much, Bear’s job is crazy demanding, now I have this new job at church to deal with, part of me wants to get rid of anything extraneous on the calendar. It’s so easy to talk myself out of any kind of a social life, but when I force myself to get out there I find it so rewarding. Making myself make time for my own fun has made doing everything else I have to do so much easier. It really is true that you have to take care of yourself first, and as hard as it is to make it happen, I’m really loving the results.

  1. I'm reading your blog for so long now and I never could bring myself up to comment on your beautiful entries. But now is the day ;)You do so much for others and it is essential, that you also do good things to yourself. It reminds me of a saying in the bible, where it says that you should always love God, and your neighbour as much as yourself. Put God first, yourself second, family third, next church/congregation and at last others.Don't forget to treat yourself well, otherwise you won't have enough energy to help others.I didn't mean to be so philosophical. But your deep affection to God and how you openely blog about it is an inspiration for me (as well as all your cool crafty things :D)keep on going :)Janine

  2. Good bra = taller more confident person… weird but true… I had someone take me under their wing when I was in my twenties and taught me this. I often forget it… thanks for the reminder.

  3. Oh thank you for giving me photo cred!! I had a great night that night. So many happy smiles over our "life changing event". 🙂
